Robert Hamilton
Artistic Director & Principal
Robert trained at Bird College of Dance & Performance in London. Robert was born in Glasgow and became interested in dance at a very early age. He worked within the British Association of Teachers of Dance examinations and at 17 achieved his Association status.
Robert obtained one of two full scholarships awarded each year to train at Bird College in London. He was support by the scholarship scheme for three years, which enabled him to obtain qualifications of the highest calibre from R.A.D. and I.S.T.D.
He was also Principal Dancer with the Bird Theatre Company working with renowned choreographers such as Yuri Yhukoa of the B.R.B. and Derrick Randolph of Scapino Ballet. He toured Europe lecturing and taking workshops to enable children to create and perform.
Robert made his debut in London’s West End in the hit musical CATS playing Mr Mistoffelees. The producers of “The Great Dance” then spotted him and he left the show not only to choreograph, but to also dance the lead in a filmed version for Columbia Tristar. On completion Robert performed in European tour of FAME and was Dance Captain on this production. On returning to London, he played the part of Antonio in ‘Dick Whittington-The Musical’ working with renowned choreographer Gillian Lynne.
He has also performed in a wide variety of other events and productions including; The Brit Awards with Robbie Williams, The Generation Game, Saturday Night Fever, TV2 Sweden, Give Your Mate A Break, Stars in Your Eyes and the Royal Variety Performance. Robert expanded his knowledge in ballet and jazz by attending Pineapple and Dance Works for further training and working with a variety of established professional choreographers.
Developing his interests in choreography, Robert became a guest teacher at Bird College of Theatre & Dance and the London Studio Centre. There he trained and developed the students to professional level. Moving towards choreography, he joined International Cruise Lines producing various shows.
He then toured as a freelance choreographer where his individual style became well known within the commercial and contemporary industries within Europe. Robert choreographed trade shows and promotions for TAG, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior and Elizabeth Emmanuel. On his return to London, Robert became a resident teacher in jazz and contemporary dance at Pinapple Dance Studios providing training at all levels and continuing his passion for choreography.
On returning to Glasgow, Robert founded Dancepoint in 2000 to provide dynamic dance, aerial and performance training for young dancers. He has gone onto create one of Scotland’s most successful dance schools and choreograph a number of hugely prolific dance acts, featuring in the finals of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent and Sky’s Got To Dance including The Box, Fear of the Unknown, Dance Illusion and most recently BBC’s The Greatest Dancer.
